A Curro school in Noordwyk, Midrand, has had its electricity supply disconnected after allegedly racking up more than R9.3 million in unpaid power bills, The Star reported.

The disconnection was carried out on Tuesday as part of City Power's ongoing revenue recovery drive targeting major defaulters across Johannesburg. The operation involved the utility's Revenue Protection Unit, security personnel and officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

According to City Power, the private school is one of four high-value customers collectively owing the utility R38.1 million, with individual debts ranging from R5 million to R13 million.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the outstanding amounts had accumulated since 2023 despite repeated attempts by the utility to engage with customers and recover the money owed.

He said prolonged non-payment had left City Power with no alternative but to disconnect the school's electricity supply.
