Curro School in Noordwyk has been disconnected from the electricity grid after allegedly accumulating more than R9.3 million in unpaid power bills, as City Power intensifies its crackdown on defaulting customers across Johannesburg.
The private school was disconnected on Tuesday during a joint operation involving City Power's Revenue Protection Unit, security teams and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the action formed part of an intensified revenue recovery campaign targeting major defaulters across the city. Curro is among four high-value properties collectively owing the utility R38.1 million, with individual debts ranging between R5 million and R13 million.
According to City Power, the outstanding amounts have accumulated since 2023 despite repeated attempts to recover the money and engage with the affected customers.
Mangena said the utility had been left with little choice but to disconnect the school's electricity supply after prolonged non-payment.
