An ambulance transporting a seriously ill patient from the island of Thassos to a hospital on the mainland was charged a €39 ferry fare, according to the Greek Association of Emergency Rescuers.
It argued that the charge runs contrary to established practice, under which ambulances and other emergency medical transport are typically allowed to travel on ferries free of charge, including exemption from tolls.
The incident occurred on Monday during a transfer via the Limenas-Keramoti ferry route to Kavala, said the association, which has lodged a complaint.
