An escaped convict has been arrested for allegedly stealing wallets from a string of shop assistants in central Athens, police said Thursday.

The 48-year-old man was charged with theft and forgery, after police found him to be carrying a fake Albanian passport and identity card.

A police statement said he was arrested Friday following a complaint from a pharmacy assistant in central Athens whose wallet had been stolen. Police said the suspect was found to be behind another four similar thefts, all from shop assistants.

Police said the suspect had failed to return from furlough from a prison where he had been serving a six-month sentence.
