A prolific burglar whose raids on shops in southern Athens forced police to form a special task force has been arrested after a hit in Aghios Dimitrios, authorities said Tuesday.

A police statement said the 49-year-old Greek man is suspected of having forced his way into at least nine shops in Aghios Dimitrios, Ilioupoli, Argyroupoli and Alimos since May.

It said the man allegedly burgled one shop twice in as many days, while “in order to maximise his proceeds he would undertake multiple burglaries within the same day.”

Police said the suspect allegedly stole cash and mobile phones before driving off on a stolen motorbike.

He was arrested June 10.
