A police search was underway for an inmate who escaped from the Greek capital’s Korydallos Prison on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The details and circumstances of his escape was not immediately provided, although some media reports indicated that the 48-year-old unnamed inmate made a run for it when prison employees opened a door to remove garbage bags from the prison’s central storage room.

The convict, who was serving a seven-year and six-month sentence for possession, sale and transportation of drugs, as well as for violating laws on weapons, was due to be released in July 2031.
