Two employees from Athens’ Korydallos Prison have been arrested in connection with the escape of an inmate on Tuesday morning.

The two men are accused of inadvertently releasing a prisoner, which also launched a disciplinary procedure against them.

The details and circumstances of his escape were not immediately provided, although some media reports indicated that the 48-year-old unnamed inmate made a run for it when prison employees opened a door to remove garbage bags from the prison’s central storage room.

The convict, who was serving a seven-year and six-month sentence for possession, sale and transportation of drugs, as well as for violating laws on weapons, was due to be released in July 2031.

According to information, the 48-year-old had previously been deemed suitable for regular leave by the competent Council. During the last six months, he had received three regular leaves and returned to prison on time.
