Police east of Athens have arrested a man suspected of being behind a series of thefts this year at local cemeteries from which heavy brass ornaments went missing.
A police statement Wednesday said the 40-year-old Greek man was taken into custody by officers from a special team formed to deal with the problem as he was trying to scale a cemetery wall in the Paiania area before dawn Sunday.
He was found in possession of heavy brass lamps, metal frames for photographs and other grave ornaments whose provenance he could not explain. Police said the suspect is believed to have been involved in at least six cemetery break-ins.
