A man who allegedly specialised in attacking and violently robbing elderly women he followed into their apartment buildings has been arrested in central Thessaloniki, police said Wednesday.

A police statement said the 26-year-old Greek man is suspected of having robbed at least four people in the city center between May 10 and June 3, snatching jewellery and other valuables estimated to be worth more than €7,000.

“In some cases, he used intense violence, endangering his victims’ lives,” the statement said.

The suspect was taken into custody Tuesday in the northern port city’s Sykees district, and police said he violently resisted arrest.
