Two men have been arrested in northern Greece over a brutal home invasion last year in which an elderly woman was severely beaten by robbers who escaped with a small sum in cash and some jewellery, police said Wednesday.

A police statement only identified the two suspects as foreign nationals, who were taken into custody Monday in Thessaloniki and Kavala. They face criminal charges including for aggravated robbery and grievous bodily harm.

The attack took place in October 2025 at Angelokastro, near Messolonghi, when three masked men broke into the elderly woman’s house and tortured her to make her reveal where she kept cash and valuables.

“They used extreme violence, hitting the woman in the head, face and body,” the police statement said. The robbers finally made off with €70 and some jewellery, escaping in a car a fourth member of the gang was driving.
