Two people have been arrested in the southern Peloponnese region on suspicion of involvement in phone scams targeting vulnerable people that netted them more than €60,000 in six weeks, police said Thursday.
A police statement said the two Greek nationals, aged 23 and 47, were taken into custody near the town of Sparta Wednesday and are suspected of pulling off at least three scams, while in two more cases they were unsuccessful. Police are also seeking to identify other members of the gang they allegedly belonged to.
The statement said the suspects pretended to be tax employees or accountants, and talked their victims into giving them cash and valuables kept at home, ostensibly so that they could be officially registered with the tax authorities. Once they got their hands on the cash and valuables they vanished.
Overall, police said, the scammers made €61,200 out of their three victims.
