Two suspected members of a ring of phone scammers have been arrested in northern Greece for allegedly defrauding six elderly people out of a total €120,000, police said Sunday.
A police statement said a man and a woman aged 27 and 22 were arrested Saturday in the town of Kastoria, and are believed to have belonged to the operational branch of the gang, turning up to collect cash and valuables other accomplices had talked the victims into leaving outdoors for them.
Police said the gang defrauded six elderly women in Lastoria, Grevena, Ptolemaida and Drama between May 12-23.
In each case, they pretended to be accountants, claimed that any cash or valuables kept at home must be declared to tax authorities and offered to do the job on behalf of the victims. When the women agreed, they were instructed to leave cash and valuables outdoors, which the two suspects allegedly picked up and vanished with.
