Police have arrested a 22-year-old for defrauding an elderly woman of cash and jewelry worth over €120,000.

Police say the 22-year-old phoned the elderly woman, living in the tony northern Athens suburb of Kifissia, on June 17, pretending to be an employee of HEDNO, the electricity network maintenance company. He and unknowned accomplices convinced the old lady to place her money and valuables outside her home, because there was the likelihood of electrocution. They went to her home and stole her money and jewelry.

It is not the first time an elderly person has fallen victim for this type of scam.

While searching his residence Satrurday, police retrieved gold jewelry, the clothes he was weasring on the day of the incident and impounded the car used by him and his accomplices on the day of the theft.

Ap;parently, the 22-year-old has committed similar crimes, police said.
