An 84-year-old woman in Pieria, northern Greece, has fallen victim to a telephone scam, losing cash, jewelry and valuables worth more than €50,000 after a woman posing as an accounting firm employee falsely claimed the assets needed to be recorded to avoid a tax penalty.

Police have identified three suspects in connection with the incident, which took place in May, though no arrests have been made.

According to investigators, a 44-year-old female suspect convinced the victim to hand over 50 Gold Sovereign coins worth an estimated €40,000, jewelry valued at €10,000 and €750 in cash under the pretext of an audit.

Authorities said the valuables were collected by two men, aged 33 and 44, using a vehicle owned by the woman accused of making the call.

A case file is being prepared for submission to the public prosecutor in Katerini, while the investigation continues to apprehend the suspects and also determine whether they were involved in other similar fraud cases. [AMNA]
