Police have arrested two men in the Athenian district of Agios Panteleimonas as they attempted to defraud a 99-year-old woman out of her savings and jewelry by pretending to be employees of a power utility.
The two suspects, aged 24 and 25, called the woman and convinced her to place jewelry and money in a bag and leave them outside her home, under the pretext that there was a power leak.
The woman’s son got wind of the scheme and called the police. The officers arrived at the scene and caught the 25-year-old as he was entering the apartment building to receive the money and jewelry. Officers also detained his 24-year-old accomplice who was waiting in a getaway car nearby.
The investigation revealed that the two men had repeatedly attempted to defraud a 57-year-old woman in the southern suburb of Glyfada, after they found a photo of her front door on the suspects’ confiscated mobile phone.
Authorities believe the suspects were involved in a total of three similar cases of fraud with the loot exceeding €13,000.
