Police in Athens have dismantled two gangs accused of selling drugs to minors in the capital’s northern suburbs, arresting nine young suspects and identifying two others who remain at large.
Investigators allegedly found evidence that the groups, made up largely of teenagers, had been operating since April in areas including Ekali, Drosia, Dionysos, Nea Erythraia and Thrakomakedones.
The suspects, aged 14 to 19, face charges of forming and participating in criminal organizations and drug trafficking. Two adults have also been arrested on charges of neglect of parental oversight.
Police said one of the two gangs was led by a 21-year-old alleged ringleader who remains wanted. During Tuesday’s operation, the suspect allegedly rammed a police vehicle and struck an officer with his car, causing serious leg injuries. He now faces an additional charge of attempted homicide.
Authorities said the groups sold cannabis, cocaine and pharmaceutical pills, primarily to minors, with some transactions taking place near playgrounds, bus stops and school grounds. Investigators also alleged that gang members sought to recruit children as young as 13.
