A spot search on a car traveling in northern Greece has led to the seizure of more than 100 kilograms of marijuana in packages spread across the rear seats and in the luggage compartment, authorities said.
A police statement said the driver, only identified as a foreign national, was arrested for drug smuggling. The car was stopped Sunday near the northwestern port town of Igoumenitsa, which is a key travel hub for people heading to and from Italy, as well as being situated close to the border with Albania, a major source of marijuana.
A total 102 packages of marijuana were found in the back of the vehicle and in the trunk, police said, which weighed nearly 110 kilos in all. Police are interested in who the drugs were to have been delivered to, and their origin.
