Classes resumed in Coimbatore schools on Thursday, with government school teachers extending a warm welcome to their students as they returned after summer vacation. Many schools greeted children with flowers, sweets and gift boxes containing stationery items such as pencils, pens, erasers, scales and sharpeners to mark the beginning of the new academic year.Teachers said the initiative was aimed at creating a positive atmosphere and encouraging students to return to school with enthusiasm after the summer vacation.Meanwhile, the School Education Department has directed headmasters to closely monitor student attendance from the first day of reopening. Officials said special attention should be given to students who remain absent during the initial days of the academic year.According to department officials, students may stay away from school for various reasons, including health issues or lack of interest in resuming classes. Headmasters have been instructed to contact parents if a student remains absent for more than two days and persuade them to send their children to school. If a student continues to be absent for more than five days, headmasters have been asked to visit the child’s home and take steps to ensure that the student returns to school. The measure is intended to prevent dropouts and improve attendance levels.Education Department officials said similar efforts had helped address absenteeism in some areas in previous years. Teachers and headmasters have also been advised to create awareness among parents about the importance of education and regular school attendance. The department has further instructed schools to identify students who require additional academic support and take measures to improve their learning outcomes. Officials said inspections would be carried out in schools in the coming weeks to review attendance and academic preparedness. Published - June 04, 2026 06:36 pm IST
