Customs officials at Athens International Airport have caught a Greek national trying to smuggle half a million euros in €500 notes into the country from the Persian Gulf, authorities said Tuesday.

The AADE independent tax authority said in a statement that the suspect had travelled from Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and had not declared the cash at customs. AADE said the money has been impounded, while the passenger will be further investigated.
