Authorities investigating an alleged narcotics transaction have arrested two people and seized nearly a million euros in cash found in the offices of a Rhodes real estate firm raided over a suspected link to the drugs case.
A Coast Guard statement Wednesday said the crackdown started August 27 with the arrest in the port of Piraeus of a 62-year-old man who took delivery of a piece of luggage sent unaccompanied from Rhodes on a ferry, after a sniffer dog discovered small quantities of cocaine and marijuana in the luggage.
The sender was identified as a 45-year-old Albanian national on Rhodes who worked for a local real estate company, which was raided during an operation to arrest him; €949,658 in cash was discovered on the premises and confiscated.
The statement said the raid produced “serious indications of criminal trafficking of drugs, money laundering and organised crime.” An extra €3,750 in cash was found in the suspect’s possession and also confiscated.
