A large-scale police operation was launched in Crete in the early hours of Thursday as part of a crackdown on the drug trade, and specifically on two suspected organized crime groups operating on the island.
According to the Creta Live news website, nearly 200 police officers were taking part in the operation, which involves raids on dozens of houses and livestock units in the prefecture of Iraklio, Rethymno and Lasithi.
The operation is said to be focused on the activities of two specific families with known links to organized crime. At least one of the suspects under investigation has also been linked to the OPEKEPE farm subsidies scandal, according to Creta Live.
The operation is being supervised and coordinated by the Iraklion Crime Investigation Division’s Narcotics Unit and includes members of the special forces unit EKAM and the OPKE organized crime unit.
