Greek customs officials seized more than 477,000 smuggled cigarettes in two separate cases at Athens International Airport.
In the first case, customs officers, assisted by a specially trained detection dog, found 362,800 cigarettes in 26 parcels at the airport’s mail facility. The shipments were bound for Germany and Belgium, and an investigation is underway to identify the senders.
Days earlier, customs officers searching the luggage of an Egyptian woman arriving from Cairo found 114,200 cigarettes distributed among seven suitcases.
She was arrested and referred to a prosecutor. The seizures represent nearly €97,620 in unpaid duties and taxes.
