Greek customs authorities seized 84 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipment of roses from Colombia at Athens International Airport on Wednesday, authorities said, correcting an earlier estimate of 100 kilograms of the drug.
The operation followed information provided by the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s Athens office and resulted in the arrest of six people, most of them Albanian nationals.
Four suspects were apprehended at the airport, where they were allegedly preparing to collect the drugs. Two others were arrested in the Marathon area, northeast of Athens, where authorities believe the cocaine was to be stored.
The seizure was carried out by officers of Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue, or AADE, with assistance from the police Organized Crime Directorate.
Authorities did not immediately provide further details about the shipment or the suspects.
