A yellow weather warning has been issued for nine regions in Eastern Bulgaria for Wednesday, May 20, due to expected heavy precipitation and strong winds.
Cloud cover will be broken across the country, but in the eastern half it will be more significant, with cumulus and cumulonimbus formations developing. Around and after midday, short-term rainfall is expected in parts of the eastern regions, often accompanied by thunderstorms. By evening, the same unstable conditions are forecast to spread into Central Bulgaria. Conditions are also favorable for hail formation.
Six regions in Northeastern Bulgaria are under a yellow code for intense rainfall, while three southeastern regions are also under warning due to strong winds. Winds will generally be moderate nationwide, but in eastern areas they are expected to strengthen to strong north-northwesterly gusts. Maximum daytime temperatures will range between 21°C and 26°C, with around 21°C expected in the Sofia region.
In mountainous areas, cloud cover will vary but will often be significant, with cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds dominating. Short-lived precipitation and thunderstorms are expected mainly in the afternoon and early evening hours. Winds will be moderate to strong from the north. Temperatures will reach around 14°C at 1,200 meters altitude and approximately 6°C at 2,000 meters.
