The levies will go into effect Sept. 8 and match the rates of U.S. tariffs on goods such as steel, dairy products, appliances and agricultural equipment.

The import taxes will apply to hockey sticks, building materials, liquors and certain kinds of clothing.

The import taxes will hit about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year, including products ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.

Canada will retaliate with tariffs on US goods starting September 8, escalating the ongoing trade conflict.
