The United States President, Donald Trump, has announced plans to increase tariffs on vehicles, automotive parts and steel imported from Canada to 50 per cent, accusing the country of exploiting the US through what he described as unfair trade practices. Trump made the announcement in a post on his official social media account, @realDonaldTrump, on Monday, warning that the new tariffs would take effect on January 1, 2027.

The president announced the new levies, effective Jan. 1, after Canada said it would retaliate against duties the U.S. implemented over the weekend.
