Leading African scientists have launched an urgent intervention following the WHO's declaration of a Public Health Emergency over a rising Ebola outbreak in East and Central Africa, driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which poses significant challenges due to the lack of vaccines and treatments.

"There are significant uncertainties to the true number of infected persons and geographic spread," the Geneva-based body warned

More than 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths have been reported. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved treatments or vaccines.
