The government is divided over the preferences. Meloni intends to put the sub-amendment tabled by the PD-M5S and Italia Viva – which extends them – to the vote; this is the trap devised by Francesco Boccia with La Russa’s backing. With the opposition hot on her heels and Vannacci calling for a vote, Meloni is said to have instructed her senators to proceed.This has been confirmed by Fdi senators themselves. Forza Italia and the Lega are set to fall into line. They are opposed to the move, but for Tajani and Salvini, a split would come at an electoral cost.
The Senate has rejected the amendment on preferential votes proposed by the PD, M5S and IV. The rift has been resolved. Malan: “We will introduce them, but we will vote against the amendment.”
