The public response to an April Fool's Day ad featuring a luxurious doghouse was so positive, the building company behind it went ahead and built one for real and is auctioning it off for charity.The house features a double-glazed window, carpet and long run metal roofing and will be sold to raise money for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).Landmark Central Auckland owner Warwick Aldridge who helped build the house told Morning Report his team were caught off guard by the popularity of the concept that was never meant to materialise."It's a rather large doghouse with a little bedroom for the dog, it comes complete with a dog bed and a little area out the front just to hang out and enjoy the sun," Aldridge said.Two dogs make themselves at home.Landmark Central AucklandThe response from the public to the company's April Fools joke was so positive, the team decided to create the house for real."I was involved with drawing up a plan for it and dusted the apron off to help build it with one of our other project managers."The doghouse will be given away by way of a raffle at the Auckland Home Show. Tickets cost $5 each, with proceeds going to the SPCA.Aldridge said the home show was taking place in a challenging time for the sector."It's still pretty tough in Auckland. Other regions around the country are showing signs of improvement, but Auckland's still a very tough market for residential new homes."We've been waiting for it to turn for the last couple of years. You know, low interest rates didn't seem to make any difference. A change of government, maybe, maybe not. Who knows," he said.
