A dog shelter set up as part of a community-driven stray dog-free initiative was inaugurated in Adat here on Thursday, giving fresh momentum to efforts aimed at humane stray animal management.The shelter, built to temporarily house puppies collected from various parts of the Adat grama panchayat, was inaugurated by film and theatre actor Gopalan Adat. The initiative is being implemented under the leadership of the ‘Kaval’ collective as part of the panchayat’s broader stray dog control programme.AdoptionSponsored by the Barrister Club operating at the Puzhakkal River Tourism Village, the facility will provide temporary care and protection to rescued puppies. These animals will later be handed over to individuals willing to adopt them.Organisers said the initiative is a preparatory step towards a comprehensive stray dog management plan envisioned by the grama panchayat. The project focuses on controlling the stray dog population through humane and practical measures rather than harmful methods.Adat grama panchayat president Anil Akkara said the initiative could evolve into a sustainable, people-led model for addressing stray dog issues in the long term.
