The world marks the 60th World Literacy Day with the most apt theme there could be: "Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity". Literacy is often understood simply as the ability to read and write. But literacy is much more than a basic educational skill.
It is a gateway to opportunity, a foundation for participation in society and an important determinant of who can access, understand and act on the information that increasingly shapes our lives. This is why the relationship between literacy, socioeconomic inequality and environmental sustainability deserves far greater attention.
