A 68-year-old woman accused, along with her son, of concealing the remains of her elderly mother at their home in Nea Makri, northeast of Athens, told a court on Monday that she has only vague recollections of her mother’s disappearance.
Her 36-year-old son, who is also on trial, denied any involvement, saying he was unaware of what had happened and only later learned that his mother had been collecting his grandmother’s pension for an extended period.
The woman has admitted burying her mother’s body at her Nea Makri home so she could continue receiving the pension.
Asked by the judge during Monday’s session when her mother had died, the 68-year-old said she could not remember, adding that “she was very old.” When asked what happened after her mother’s death, she replied: “We roused her up so that she wouldn’t be dead.”
Her son told the court: “I’m not well, I haven’t understood what’s going on,” adding that he learned afterward that his mother had been receiving his grandmother’s pension.
