Police are investigating a woman’s reported confession that she buried her elderly mother in the yard of a home in Nea Makri, northeast of Athens, nearly a decade ago and never reported the death.
Authorities suspect the woman did so to continue collecting her mother’s pension payments.
The case came to light after the woman’s daughter, the elderly woman’s granddaughter, contacted authorities and reported what she knew.
The grandmother, who was born in the mid-1920s, had not been seen or heard from for years.
Police and municipal crews have excavated the property but have not found human remains. The search is continuing as prosecutors review the evidence.
