The discovery of a woman’s skeleton in a Nea Makri basement this week is the latest in a string of pension fraud cases, in which relatives conceal a death to keep collecting benefits.
Police had excavated the yard searching for a body before finding bones wrapped in nylon inside.
The remains may belong to a woman who would be 90 today. Her daughter and the woman’s grandson were arrested for failing to report the death. A probe began when the granddaughter said she had lost contact with her grandmother for a decade; bank withdrawals continued until last month.
In Viotia in 2025, a municipal employee was found to have hidden her mother’s 2023 death, burying her in a stable to keep collecting pension and disability payments.
