Authorities have found human remains wrapped in plastic in the basement of a house in Nea Makri, a coastal settlement northeast of Athens, in what investigators believe could be the body of an elderly woman who had been missing for about a decade.
The remains are believed to belong to the woman, but their identity must be confirmed through forensic and laboratory examinations, authorities said.
The discovery is the latest development in a case that began after the woman’s granddaughter, who lives in France and recently returned to Greece, filed a complaint with local police reporting her grandmother missing for about 10 years.
The woman, who was around 80 when she disappeared, lived with her daughter and a grandson who reportedly has psychological problems.
Authorities are also examining the elderly woman’s financial records. According to preliminary information, transactions were recorded in her bank accounts as recently as August, even though her death had never been officially reported.
