The suspected mother of a months-old baby whose frozen corpse was discovered over the weekend inside a suitcase in a central Athens short-term rental has denied harming the infant – which, according to a coroner’s report, bore at least ten stab wounds.
The 38-year-old German national reportedly said that the baby died of natural causes and she was so attached to it that she kept the body. Tomorrow, the woman is due to appear before an examining magistrate to answer questions on the circumstances of the baby’s death.
Kathimerini understands that the woman – who has been detained together with the other two adults associated with the apartment in the capital’s Kypseli district – has not backed up her 43-year-old Greek husband’s claim that the baby was not theirs but had been accidentally mixed up with another couple’s at the clinic where it was born.
The man reportedly asserted that the baby was “satanic” and had died of natural causes two years ago.
He had been accused six years ago by another German woman he met online of allegedly inviting her to Greece under false pretences and forcing her into prostitution, and had spent time in pre-trial detention but was released in October 2020 after the woman withdrew her complaint and authorities found no additional evidence.
