A woman awaiting trial over the abandonment of her newborn child in a rubbish bin was found dead in a police holding cell in Iraklio, Crete, on Sunday, authorities said.

Police sources said the 34-year-old woman, who was being held on remand, had been transferred to Iraklio on Saturday morning. The circumstances of her death remain unclear, with an autopsy expected to determine the cause.

Her lawyer said he had previously requested that she be admitted to a psychiatric facility, citing mental health issues and learning difficulties. However, she was remanded to Korydallos prison pending trial.

The woman was accused in connection with an incident in May 2025, when a newborn baby was found alive in a dumpster in the Nea Alikarnassos district of Iraklio.

Emergency responders discovered the infant after being called to assist a 33-year-old woman suffering from severe bleeding at a nearby home. After she reportedly refused to explain her condition or go to hospital, paramedics searched the area and found the baby in a rubbish bin.
