An infant whose body was found frozen inside a container in a suitcase at an apartment in central Athens had more than 10 stab wounds, according to a forensic examination.
The wounds, which were found on the infant’s back, varied in depth. Based on the findings, the cause of death was multiple stab wounds, and authorities are treating the case as a criminal investigation. A charge of infanticide is expected to be added to the case file.
The coroner has been unable to determine the exact time of death or the infant’s age because of the condition in which the body was found. Initial estimates suggest the child was about eight to nine months old.
The body was discovered on Sunday at an Airbnb rental on Thasos Street in Kypseli, in a suitcase carried by a 38-year-old German woman and her 15-year-old daughter as they prepared to leave.
The woman initially told authorities that the infant was her own child and had died about eight months ago.
