Five months ago, two reports by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), an intergovernmental knowledge and learning centre focused on the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), warned that glaciers across the region were melting at an accelerating pace, with ice loss rates doubling since 2000.The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), in its Changing Dynamics of Glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya Region from 1990 to 2020 and HKH Glacier Outlook 2026: Insights from 50 Years of Himalayan Glacier Monitoring, had warned that the region's glaciers had lost up to 27 metres of ice thickness since 1975.The findings carry significance for the nearly two billion people downstream who depend on meltwater from what are often called the "Water Towers of Asia".The HKH has the largest volume of ice outside the polar regions, with more than 63,700 glaciers covering nearly 55,782 square kilometres. These glaciers are the source of at least 10 major Asian river systems and support food, water, energy and livelihood security for billions.But the scale and pace of the change are becoming increasingly concerning.Between 1990 and 2020, HKH glaciers lost about 12% of their total area and 9% of their estimated ice reserves. The HKH Glacier Outlook 2026, which synthesised data from 38 monitored glaciers, found that widespread glacier wastage had doubled after 2000.That, ICIMOD said, signals that parts of the Himalayan cryosphere may be nearing critical tipping points towards irreversible retreat.“This isn’t a distant problem; it’s a crisis unfolding in real-time, with new disasters every summer and monsoon. The fact that ice loss rates have doubled this century should shock us all into action,” said Pema Gyamtsho, Director General of ICIMOD.“The Hindu Kush Himalaya is at a crossroads. The rapidly escalating impacts we’re seeing from water uncertainty to catastrophic floods underscore that we are in a critical decade for the cryosphere. We must scale up monitoring and invest in adaptation now. These aren’t blind spots becoming surprises anymore; they are our new reality.”Small glaciers are shrinking fasterThe retreat is particularly acute among the smallest glaciers in the region.Glaciers smaller than 0.5 square kilometres are shrinking more rapidly than larger glaciers. Around three-quarters of the region's glaciers fall into this vulnerable size category.“Between 1990 and 2020, HKH glaciers lost about 12% of their total area, but the losses are most acute for the region’s smallest glaciers, those below 0.5 km², which are shrinking more rapidly than others,” said Sudan Bikash Maharjan, Remote Sensing Analyst at ICIMOD and lead author of the glacier dynamics report.“This poses immediate risks of localised water shortages for high mountain communities and intensifies hazards like glacial lake outburst floods. The danger is magnified because three-quarters of the region’s glaciers fall into this vulnerable size class. We are not just losing ice; we are facing a rapid escalation of risks.”The losses are also unevenly distributed across the HKH.The eastern Hengduan Shan mountains recorded the highest percentage of glacier-area loss, with some areas losing up to 33% of their glacier area in just three decades.However, the largest absolute area losses are concentrated in the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra basins, where more than 74% of the region's glaciers are found.Why Himalayan glaciers matterThe consequences of glacier retreat extend well beyond the mountains.The HKH's glaciers feed major river systems across Asia, making them critical to the water, food and energy security of downstream populations.Around 78% of the region's glacier area is located between 4,500 and 6,000 metres above sea level, where it is highly exposed to elevation-dependent warming.The larger glaciers, those above 10 square kilometres, hold nearly 40% of the region's natural water reserves.The heavily glaciated Karakoram range is particularly important. It is home to 18 of the 25 largest glaciers in the HKH and remains highly vulnerable to long-term water, food and disaster risks.A major monitoring gapWhile the rate of glacier loss is accelerating, the data available to scientists remains limited.Of the 38 glaciers covered by the HKH Glacier Outlook 2026, only seven meet the global benchmark monitoring standards of the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS).Major glacierised regions including the Karakoram, Sikkim, Zanskar and Bhutan remain largely unmonitored.“We are trying to navigate a rapidly changing future with an incomplete map,” said Mohd. Farooq Azam, a cryosphere specialist at ICIMOD and one of the report’s authors.“Large parts of the Himalaya remain blind spots. Without expanding our monitoring networks and standardising methodologies, accelerated changes in water flows and cryosphere risks could remain undetected until the impacts are severe. Sustained monitoring of representative glaciers like Mera and Rikha Samba in Nepal, and Chhota Shigri in India, is critical, they are our early warning indicators for the entire mountain system.”The monitoring gap makes it harder to track changes across one of the world's most important mountain systems and assess how they could affect water flows and cryosphere-related risks.The road aheadThe reports come as the world enters the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation and the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034).ICIMOD has called for a major expansion of glacier monitoring, better standardisation of methodologies and stronger investment in climate-resilient adaptation planning.The message from the reports is clear: the Himalayan cryosphere is changing rapidly, but large parts of it remain poorly monitored.For the billions of people dependent on the rivers originating in the HKH, the challenge is not only the loss of glaciers but also understanding how quickly that loss is occurring and preparing for the changes in water availability and risks that may follow.
