A man arrested on suspicion of assault and breaking into cars fatally injured himself while in police detention on the southern island of Crete early Wednesday, authorities said.
According to a police statement, the man was found half-conscious in a holding cell at the Chania police station before dawn, after having hanged himself by an item of clothing.
He was given first aid and taken to the Chania hospital where he succumbed, the statement said. The man was only identified as a foreign national.
He had been detained shortly after midnight on suspicion of breaking into a series of parked cars, and was arrested after another man lodged a complaint alleging that he had attacked him a short time earlier, causing grievous bodily harm.
An internal investigation has been ordered.
