Athens officials are assessing damage to 14 buildings in the Kypseli district linked to construction of a new metro line, while tunneling has been suspended since May because of ground subsidence.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said Tuesday that Elliniko Metro, the state company overseeing the project, had provided the city with preliminary data on the buildings, including their condition before and after construction and the methods used to assess subsidence and potential risks to structural integrity.
Doukas said the documents were only part of the technical information requested by the city and that a full report by independent experts was still pending. He described the subsidence affecting several buildings as concerning and said the city was supporting residents.
The findings are expected to be presented to the city and residents in September. Doukas said the priority was ensuring residents’ safety and fully repairing any damage linked to the metro works.
