Athens Mayor Haris Doukas has pledged that the municipality will take all legal measures to protect residents and their property following damage reported in Kypseli homes, allegedly linked to ongoing Athens Metro expansion works.

In a social media post, Doukas said “dangerous cracks and damage” had been observed in a double-digit number of apartment buildings, “forcing many residents to leave their homes.” He added that the issue would be discussed at Wednesday’s Athens City Council meeting.

Meanwhile, the head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office, Aristeidis Koreas, has ordered an urgent preliminary investigation into the case.

Prosecutors will examine whether the reported damage is linked to the ongoing construction works and whether the activities pose a risk to the structural integrity of buildings or public safety. The findings of the inquiry will determine the next judicial steps.

The damage was reported during construction of Metro Line 4, which will connect Galatsi with Evangelismos. Hairline cracks were detected in the masonry of buildings along streets where a tunnel-boring machine (TBM) is carrying out excavation work.
