The head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office, Aristeidis Koreas, has ordered an urgent preliminary investigation into reports of cracks appearing in buildings in the Kypseli district, allegedly linked to ongoing construction work for the expansion of the Athens Metro.

The investigation will determine whether there are indications of possible criminal offenses and whether the construction activities pose a risk to the structural integrity of buildings or public safety, prosecutors said.

The findings of the preliminary inquiry will determine the next steps by judicial authorities.

The reported damage emerged during construction of Line 4 of the Athens Metro, which will connect Galatsi with Evangelismos. Hairline cracks were detected in the masonry of buildings along streets where a tunnel-boring machine (TBM) is being used for excavation work.

The TBM was halted about a month ago after the problems were reported and will not resume tunneling until Greek and international experts specializing in TBM technology complete their assessments.
