The consortium building Athens’ new metro line will pay to repair cracks reported in buildings in the downtown Kypseli district, but inspections have found no evidence that the affected structures are unsafe, Deputy Infrastructure Minister Nikos Tachiaos told the state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Thursday.
Tachiaos said engineers from Elliniko Metro SA and the contractor consortium had inspected the buildings and found no issues affecting their structural integrity.
“The damage identified appears to be fully reversible and, in any case, it is the contractor’s contractual obligation to restore it at its own expense,” he said.
He added that the Infrastructure and Transport Ministry had instructed Elliniko Metro to use “every available means” to reassure residents and workers that they were living and working in safe buildings.
