The City of Athens on Wednesday formally approved emergency financial assistance of €3,000 for each family left homeless by the collapse of a small block of flats in the central Petralona district.

Municipal officials have erected fencing round the site of the accident to prevent looting, and are inspecting other buildings in the area for signs of damage.

The seven-apartment structure listed and collapsed after midday Tuesday, but nobody was injured as signs of its imminent crepitation became visible earlier, allowing a timely evacuation.

An investigation is under way into the causes of the accident. Initial reports link the collapse with construction work on an adjacent plot of land.
