A five-storey block of flats in the central Athens district of Petralona collapsed Tuesday and one resident has been reported trapped inside.

Footage on state ERT broadcaster showed a low pile of rubble where the building with seven apartments once stood on 22, Alkminis Street.

ERT said the collapse came as work was under way at an adjacent plot to dig the foundations for a new building.It said the building collapsed gradually, allowing three people inside to escape in time. A fourth person was missing.

Sniffer dogs were searching the ruins for signs of life, while a total 30 firefighters and eight fire engines, as well as three ambulances, were on the spot.
