Fire Service rescuers search through the rubble of a four-story apartment building that collapsed in the downtown Athens district of Petralona on Tuesday. As rescue operations wrapped up after nightfall, no human casualties were reported and everyone was accounted for, except for a pet dog. Residents in the area spoke of hearing loud rumbling and cracking sounds as the building went down. Its collapse was slow enough to allow its occupants to vacate their apartment before the entire structure caved in. The apartment block at 22 Alkminis Street was one of two buildings constructed on a single plot in the early 1970s. According to preliminary estimates, its collapse may have been triggered by excavation work for a new seven-story apartment block. Five people connected to the project have been taken into custody.
