More than 145 murders were reported across the Cape Flats
August has seen over 145 murders on the Cape Flats, with a recent surge of violence in Athlone claiming five lives in a single night.
Activists say the alarming trend has highlighted the ongoing gang-related issues plaguing the region.
Athlone was hardest hit, with five people killed and one wounded in three separate shootings on Sunday night.
The first incident occurred at about 8.36pm in 3rd Avenue, Belgravia, where two men were shot. A 32-year-old man died at the scene, while another adult man was taken to hospital for treatment.
