Volunteers and veterinary professionals came together on Mandela Day to provide essential care to local pets
“They weren’t lacking compassion; they were lacking access.”
For Dr Annarie Greyling, that was one of the clearest takeaways from a Mandela Day outreach project that saw 42 animals successfully sterilised.
As a veterinarian and founder of WanderVet Animal Welfare Organisation, Greyling has spent time working in communities where the obstacles to veterinary care are often familiar. Her response was to take services directly to the animals and their families who might otherwise struggle to reach them.
Alongside sterilisation, animals received vaccinations and parasite control treatments, while veterinary students and young professionals volunteered beside their more experienced colleagues.
