Ford’s affordable electric pickup truck now has a name and a price. The company announced on Thursday that the midsize EV will be called the Fathom, starting at $29,945 including destination. It is the first model built on Ford’s new Universal EV Platform, and it arrives after the company took a $19.5 billion writedown on cancelled EV projects in 2025 and discontinued the F-150 Lightning. Preorders open early 2027, with customer deliveries following in the fall.
The name breaks from Ford’s tradition of recycling legacy nameplates for EVs. The Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit all carried decades-old names. Kay Hart, general manager of Ford’s Model e business, said Fathom reflects “a new depth of innovation” in engineering, manufacturing, and design. Ford trademarked several other names last year, including Fuze, Hive, Mythic, and Evos, but none of those has been confirmed for a production vehicle.
At just under $30,000, the Fathom matches Ford’s Maverick hybrid and lands in the same range as the Chevy Bolt and new Nissan Leaf. Standard equipment includes a large touchscreen with native Apple Maps with EV route planning, BlueCruise hands-free driving capability, bidirectional charging, a digital key, and a frunk. “It is not a stripped down vehicle,” Hart said. Battery size, range, and fast-charging specs have not been announced, but Hart said Ford will offer options for customers looking for 300 miles of range.
